Just remember these things before thinking of saving costs in outsourcing to China, India or Mexico.
- Large companies have reasonably reliable quality control processes in China. But for smaller companies in China, quality control is hard to implement.
- If you don’t have local QC personnel from your head office in China, or your country, you cannot control the supplier quality.
- Companies estimated that they can save 50% of the cost in outsourced manufacturing. But they underestimated the cost of logistics, poor quality and customer returns.
- There is always a change of key and experienced workers and personnel in a Chinese factory approximately every 6 months. So there is no consistency in manufacturing processes and quality control.
- There is always a conflict of interest between doing purchasing and doing quality control.
Now consider the time and money spent to communicate errors, weeks to ship out the first runs, get more sample parts, vendors quietly implementing parts substitution, changing specs and designs. Then more than one visit to straighten out problems with them.
